The CACLD International condemns in strong terms the heightened militarization of Nige-rian democracy as epitomized by the recent invasion of the Nigerian National Assembly by masked and armed men of the Department of State Services (DSS). The unlawful blockade of the National Assembly by the DSS operatives and the continued harassment of leaders of the Nigerian parliament by the Executive arm of government is an assault on democracy and will constitute an attempted coup de tat against the elected representatives of the people. The hos-tile takeover of the National assembly by the DSS is unconstitutional, a flagrant violation of the principles of separation of powers and a usurpation of the power of the people to hold their leaders accountable through legitimate elections.
It is within this context that we commend the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo for promptly sacking the Director General of the DSS, Mr Lawan Daura. While we welcome the measure taken by the Acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, the CACLD is of the view that the Acting President owes it as a duty to the Nigerian people to explain what he personally knew about this Coupe de tat on the Nigerian democracy. Specifically, he needs to explain who authorized this action?; What was the purpose of this action? Why did the Inspector General of Police not stop the invasion?. The Acting President must as a matter of urgency establish an independent investigation into this attempted hostile takeover of the Nigerian democratic space with a view to overhauling the Nigerian Intelligence apparatus and ensuring that those involved in this unbridled act of lawlessness are brought to book.
The Government of President Buhari and all Nigerian security agencies must en-sure that the rights of citizens are respected and that elected representatives of the people are allowed to discharge their functions without any further intimidation. .
As an organization committed to Human Rights, Democracy, Good Governance, the CACLD will continue to strive towards the protection of the freedoms of all people.
